Format of report writting

Report writing is not a easy task but you can make it if you want. You can make your report very attractive. Every students of Bachelor from Tribhuwan University has to prepare a report in their field. Many of the students do not have idea of writing report. Some of the students copy their report from others and some the students prepare report by themselves which is not according to the prescribed format of TU. Students face many problems while preparing report.

I have also been suffered a lot while in 3rd year B.Sc. To overcome this, i did research  a lot to prepare my report. There was the first problem is to choose the topic on the report is to be prepared. Sometime teachers suggest the topic to students. But sometime students have to choose the topic by themselves. Choosing a topic by self is very difficult task. Here is some suggestions to choose the topics for your report:

a) Choose the topic which is clear to you.
b) Try to consult the teacher while choosing any topic.
c) Always choose the topic of your relevant field.
d) Do not choose the topic which is too comprehensive.

Also keep in mind:
1) Choose a topic that's appropriate to the length of your paper. Students often pick topics that are too broad to be adequately covered. Narrow topics lead to close observation, while broad topics lead to over-generalization. If you're writing a five‐page paper, don't write on the history of women's rights; instead, write about one incident in the history of women's rights. Even a personal or descriptive essay will be better if you choose a narrow topic—your childhood in a small town, for example, rather than your childhood, or your uncle's barn rather than the Midwest.

2) Avoid a topic that will tempt you to summarize rather than to discuss or analyze. Don't choose the plot of Macbeth but how the final scene of Macbeth illustrates the play's theme. The second topic is narrower and less likely to lead to summary. When considering a topic, ask yourself if it can lead to a reasonable thesis.

3) Choose a topic that interests you. If you don't care about limiting cigarette advertising, don't select it as a topic for a persuasive essay. You'll have more to say, and you'll write better, on something you care about. Generally, if you choose a topic that is interesting to you, then your reader will find it interesting too.

4) If your assignment requires research, choose a topic on which you can find material. Even when you aren't writing a research paper, make sure you select a subject that you can develop with sufficient details.

5) After you've picked a topic, don't be afraid to change it if it isn't working out. Instructors would rather you write a good essay than that you grind out pages on something that was a poor choice.

Topic vs. thesis

Don't confuse a topic with a main idea or thesis. The topic provides the subject; the thesis makes an assertion about that subject. Here are a few examples of topics that might be assigned to a college student:
  1. Compare and contrast X's poem “To a Wolf” with Y's poem “The Happy Meercat.” Consider both theme and technique.
  2. Discuss the following statement: “No matter how much we may deplore human rights violations in China, the United States should not impose sanctions on the Chinese government.” Do you agree or disagree? Support your opinion.
  3. Analyze Shakespeare's use of clothing imagery in King Lear.
  4. Describe an incident in your life that caused you to change an opinion or attitude.
  5. “The Civil War had much more to do with economics than with morality.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Support your opinion.

After all these you have to do preliminary research, literature review. Review the books and surf internet on the topic on which you are going to write report. Collect the information which you think will be useful. Do not forgot to note down the important notes and also copy the URL you are visiting which will be useful in writing reference. Collect the data you need and download the relevant pictures from internet and note down the URL from which you are copying. If you know to use MS word very well the try to create the outline of the picture which you want to show, this will be plus point for you and it will be your creation.

Note: Do not try to copy the contents from books or internet rather pick up the idea and write down in your own words.

Now you have all the required things. Start arranging the collected information.
Firstly write the introduction of your topic. It shouldn't be too lengthy or too short. It should not be less than 1 page and not more than 2-3 pages (if you are writing report of about 20 pages). After introduction write the objective of your report writing.

Now start writing main body of your report. If you are giving any data in your report, try to provide first hand data i.e. primary data (taken by you). As far possible avoid the secondary data. You can use secondary data also if it is not possible to collect primary data.

After preparing all these, let your report typed in MS word in A4 size paper format and with normal margin. Now put the table of contents, abstract, recommendation letter, references, abbreviations, etc as per you requirement.
